JSTOR for secondary schools

Managing access methods can get tricky, but we're here to help! The most common form of on-campus access is through your school's IP address. For off-campus access, most secondary schools use a Google Single Sign-On or a shared Remote Username and Password. The shared login is created by the JSTOR support team.

For more information on access methods, please check out the Access Management Overview support page.

Managing your school's access

JSTOR administrator accounts are used for managing access to the platform, in addition to downloading usage reports and information on your school's subscription. Access to these admin tools are available through your JSTOR personal account. To get access to these features, you simply need to contact our Support Team and ask for admin access to your school.

The easiest way to get started is to fill out this contact update form. For more information on setting up a new admin account, please visit our New Administrators support page

Google Single Sign On

"What is Google SSO?"

Google Single Sign-On (or Google SSO) is an authentication setup that allows a user to log in with a single ID to any of several related, yet independent systems. This is sometimes referred to as "Google Social Sign-On."

For Google SSO to work with JSTOR we require that you provide a unique domain that is not shared with any other institutions in your district or larger organization. The domain is what you see at the end of your organizational email address. Here are some examples of what a domain might look like:

  • sampleuniversity.edu
  • students.sampleuniversity.edu
  • faculty.sampleuniversity.edu

If you are an Admin for your institution you can update your domain information anytime in the 'Access Methods' tab of the JSTOR Admin Portal. Alternatively, you can provide a list of domains your institution uses and I can put them into our system for you.

You can find more information about using Google Single Sign-On (SSO) on our support page.

Individual JSTOR accounts

Encourage each student* to create an individual JSTOR account. Individual accounts can be paired with your school for access to JSTOR. This means students can log in directly at jstor.org with their personal username and password for off-campus access.

To setup account pairing, a first-time user should go directly to JSTOR and be sure they are logged in through their school. They can confirm this by looking for their school's name at the top of the page. Once school access has been confirmed, they can create their individual JSTOR account by clicking on ‘Register.’

* ITHAKA does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under the age of 16. If it is discovered that we have collected PII from someone under 16 we promptly delete that information.

Remote usermame and password

For off-campus access many secondary schools use a shared username and password. Ths information is provided to the account administrator. If you have questions about your shared login, would like to update the remote username and password for your institution, or would simply like additional information on this access method, please contact our support team.
